Amsterdam Comics, an independent comics research group that “that seeks to productively clash theory with practice through several strategies” just announced their second Comics Conference, which will be held on November 15-17, 2018. Titled “Drawing Yourself In And Out Of It”, the conference focuses on the relation between the cartoonist and the story they tell, be it fiction or reporting. They seek “to explore the notions of drawing in and drawing out in terms of the capacity to affect and to be affected. Such a consideration allows us to interrelate the politics of affect with the reading and production of comics in a variety of genres—including biography, autobiography, memoir, and fiction, and fields—including journalism, history, and the Medical Humanities. With this conference we aim to encourage an interdisciplinary dialogue from which to further engage with and reflect upon the power of this culturally shifting medium.”
Keynote speakers for the conference will be groundbreaking comics reporter Joe Sacco (Palestine, Safe Area Goražde, The Great War) and Dr. Nina Mickwitz of the London College of Communication. Papers are welcomed from all kinds of fields, including comics production, focusing on how the person of the creator fits in an out of their story. You can submit your abstracts by July 15, 2018 to the organizers at firstname.lastname@example.org. Accepted participants will receive confirmation no later than August, 15 2018.
