From our continental correspondent – Little Nemo in Cherbourg

The cutest New Year’s card of this year, in my opinion, was released by the French City of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. It features classic comic character Little Nemo as he wanders through a tiny city, marvelling at all the little people.

The clip is at once a celebration of the imagination that is inherent to comics and animation, but also an initial heads-up for this year’s edition of the Animation Biennale, which will be held from June until October 2017. The festival will celebrate Nemo creator Winsor McCay (who as well as being one of the first cartooning superstars for his newspaper strips was also a pioneer of some of the earliest animation in film history), and other American creators, and also focus on the role of Cherbourg as a harbour to the Atlantic Ocean and, as such, as a port to American cultural influence.

Art direction and scenography of the event will be in the good hands of Cités Obscures magicians, François Schuiten and Benoit Peeters. So, maybe this should be a good reason to make the trip across the channel? Cherbourg awaits you (and it doesn’t even always rain there…)
