Paul Registar, a man who received a radioactive papercut as a child enabling him to become a superpowered librarian, drops us a line to let us know the 2018 Excelsior Awards shortlist is out. As regular readers will know, we love the Excelsiors, not just because they are aimed at younger readers, but because those younger readers get to shape and choose what titles win, based on their own reading and thoughts, so this isn’t boring grown ups saying what may be good for young readers, it is the young readers themselves choosing. And it gets schoolkids from all round the country taking part, not just reading, but thinking about and discussing what they read, which is a terrific thing. Here are the shortlists for the main Excelsior Awards, for readers roughly from 11-16 years of age:

Titans: The Return of Wally West, by Dan Abnett and Brett Booth, Published by DC

Slam!, by Pamela Ribon and Veronica Fish, Published by Boom! Studios

The Water Dragon’s Bride, by Rei Toma, Published by Viz Media

Trent: The Dead Man, by Rodolphe and Leo, Published by Cinebook

Wonder Woman Volume 1: The Lies, by Greg Rucka and Liam Sharp, Published by DC

Coady and The Creepies, by Liz Prince and Amanda Kirk, Published by Boom! Studios

Batman: The War of Jokes and Riddles, by Tom King and Mikel Janin, Published by DC

Gamora: Memento Mori, by Nicole Perlman and Marco Checchetto, Published by Marvel
