Really shocked and sad to learn that we lost Steve Moore – those of us of a certain age will remember his work in the very early days of both 2000 AD and the old Doctor Who Weekly (that became the long running Doctor Who Magazine) as well as more recent work, and of course there was the small matter of the creation of Axel Pressbutton with a young Alan Moore (“no relation” – a running gag between the pair) and of course that much-loved journal of the wonderfully odd, the Fortean Times. And pretty much every other area of UK comics work, from Marvel UK to Warrior. Not to mention being a mentor and supporter to Alan Moore in his embryonic comics career, an indirect gift he passed on to us all with typical generosity.
The Messrs Moore were long-term friends and still collaborating – The Moon and Serpent Bumper Book of Magic by both Moores has been marked down as a ‘forthcoming’ title for quite a while now. I had read that Steve had been taking care of an ill relative, which understandably puts a dent in anyone’s creative output, but I think most of us were hoping with that rough, tiring experience behind him that he would be turning his creative energies back to more new work, and now, very sadly, we don’t get to see him do that.
