Upcoming: Eleanor Davis’ How To Be Happy….

Published On April 19, 2014 | By Richard Bruton | Comics, Previews

Eleanor Davis is, without question, a major young creator. Winning the Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer award at the 2009 Eisners marked her ascension to the big time, capped by winning a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators in 2013.

This summer will see Fantagraphics present a major collection of her comics work, stretching all the way back to 2007, How To Be Happy.

Her work is many things to many people, a result of Davis’ style being continually changing depending on the project, whether it’s 2009s brilliant Secret Science Alliance or Stinky from Toon Books from the same year, perfect books for children, or her more adult material found in various publications through the years, including MOME and Best American Comics. Despite the changing styles, the constant is an incredible storytelling sense even when really pushing page layout, couple this with bravery, honesty, passion in what she makes and you have a star in the making.

Now, some preview pages for you to have a look at from How To Be Happy, released later this year, courtesy of a downloadable preview from Fantagraphics. It includes excerpts from her fully painted stories “In Our Eden” and “Nita Goes Home,” her story included in America’s Best Comics, as well as several looser, sketchbook strips.

(Oh, one reminder… the title may be a touch misleading.)
