One of the most wonderfully imaginative and visually ravishing tales to come out of 2000 AD recently has been Ian Edginton and Ian Culbard‘s astonishing Brass Sun. Serialised in the weekly 2000 AD it made such an impression it was later collected into American style comic issues to reach the wider comics readership who may not have seen it in The Galaxy’s Greatest Comic. Richard and I have both praised it at length, it’s an absolute gem of a story – a dangerous quest, cracking adventure and high concept (a whole solar system of worlds like a beautiful old Orrery, a lovely Steampunk touch. And it’s a system that is slowly winding down, each of the once-connected worlds now long since separate and each mostly ignoring the oncoming apocalypse in their own blinkered fashion (not entirely unlike the way our species manages to continually avoid doing anything major about climate change).

Culbard delivers some spectacular artwork – it really gives that fabulous quality that science fiction does so remarkably well, the great sense of wonder. But for all the big-screen visuals both Ians also pay close attention to the narrative and to making sure their characters come across as real people, with real emotion in their among the big moments. We’ve thought as we followed the serialised version that this was a tale which didn’t just warrant a collected trade edition but something more special, and I am glad to say Rebellion obviously thought the same way, because Brass Sun is getting a lovely hardback edition this December. Some readers are going to have a good Christmas, I think! Meantime sit back and just drink in a few pages of Edginton and Culbard’s glorious Brass Sun…
