To do in August: the Gollancz SF festival
Top UK science fiction and fantasy publisher Gollancz are holding a special multimedia science fiction mini festival in August in Waterstone’s large Piccadilly bookstore in London. The Gollancz Festival is nicely spaced between the Nine Worlds Geek Fest (Heathrow on the 8th and 9th of August) and of course the eagerly awaited giant annual WorldCon taking place in London this year, Loncon 3 (Docklands, 14th to 18th August), taking place on Wednesday 13th of August, when “Gollancz will host a creative programme of daytime digital author events, and from 6 – 9pm on the same evening they will also offer genre fiction readers the chance to attend a selection of unique panels, readings, Q&As and signings.”
As well as the physical events in the bookstore there are numerous digital events to reach out beyond just those who can make it to the physical location, including “interactive genre panels; Vox Pops and in conversations on YouTube; live debates on Twitter and Tumblr, and much more.” I rather like the fact the festival reaches out beyond those who can actually make it to one spot for an event, a nice touch. The list of authors taking part is massively impressive – Joe Abercrombie, Ben Aaronovitch, Joanne M Harris, Scott Lynch, Adam Roberts, Jon Wallace, Patrick Rothfuss, Joe Hill, Stephen Hunt, Richard Morgan, Alastair Reynolds, Sara Pinborough and more.
