Uncanny Figure Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wave 2
After feeling rather impotent about his *ahem* weapon, Donatello salvaged a Kraang droid body and assembled a new, improved weapon; a battle droid resembling the Turtles themselves. He gave this weapon a yellow bandana and a NYC manhole cover for a shell and named him Metalhead!
The Metalhead figure is one of my personal favourites, and has been since the vintage line. The sculpt work is a nigh perfect physical 3D model of the one from Nickelodeon’s TV series. The figure looks splendid; the ribbed details on his legs and arms, the cables and tubes on his stomach, all packed behind some cool looking armour, and, of course, that awesome manhole cover on his back!
As with all figures in this line, the paints are solid colours, however they seem to work better on this figure than most; matt colours on the greys make his armour look thick and battle-ready and the blues and reds of his cables stand in bold contrast to the black and yellow across the torso and arms of the figure.
Metalhead’s right arm has a hole which starts in his palm and comes out the back of his elbow, allowing you to place the included red missile piece inside as a play feature, should you want him to be mid-battle, firing away! Metalhead has ball jointed knees, legs, and neck and swivel joints on his arms and wrists, which isn’t bad, the leg articulation is pretty good, but I feel he would have benefitted massively from ball jointed shoulders or elbow joints. Maybe next time eh?

Like his fellow henchman, Xever, Dogpound used to be a human called Chris Bradford. Bradford was an actor/martial artist, very much like the real world Chuck Norris (only without the beard fist) and a member of the Foot Clan on the side. Before being coated in mutagen in the same accident as Fishface, Bradford was bitten by a dog, transforming him into the gigantic Dogpound!
The first thing you notice about the Dogpound figure, is how heavy he is, and how much of the plastic packaging he takes up! He’s roughly twice as wide as Fishface, and as such, does not include any accessories, besides the clip-on spikes for his back, and tail. People have been complaining that he is not in scale with the Turtles based on how he is depicted in the show, while this is a valid point, I think the figure still works very well, and the vintage figures were similarly scaled, making it kind of a throwback! The sculpt is really great, particularly his face which is both mean and full of character! The detailing of the fur and bone spikes on this figure are really cool too!
Dogpound’s paintjob is a very simple one, flat colours with white gradient fur moving into the browny-orange coat we know Bradford to have in this form! Unfortunately the straps that have been nicely sculpted into the figure, apparently missed being painted, therefore are the same colour as his fur. Very disappointing! This figure, as is the running theme with the Playmates TMNT, would benefit greatly from a subtle paint wash.
Dogpound has 9 points of articulation; ball jointed shoulders and legs, and swivel joints on his wrists, neck, waist and tail. This is enough to be able to pose Bradford in some powerful action poses, but elbow joints would have made this figure so much better!

Fishface was originally a human henchman of the Shredder by the name of Xever, Partnered with Chris Bradford, they were tasked to take down the Turtles. One particular run in with the Turtles caused them both to be accidently doused in mutagen, transforming them into a humanoid version of the last animal they touched, which, unfortunately for Xever, was a fish! Fishface has mechanical legs, which were reverse engineered from Kraang tech, as well as breathing apparatus enabling him to function on land. He is very strong and fast and has a venomous bite which can even cause hallucinations, as Raphael has fell victim to in the past.
The sculpt on this figure is fantastic, to a point where the lack of paint washes don’t really matter too much; the fine detail in the scales are a really nice touch. His face is particularly well done, looking like the fearsome human/fish hybrid he should! The mechanical parts on Fishface are cool too, from the Kraang-tech legs, to the backpack and breathing apparatus attached to his gills.
The paints are essentially solid colours on this figure, and while they would benefit supremely from a light paint wash, which would bring out the lovely sculpted detailing extremely well, the figure still looks awesome. Xever comes with a dagger, which is his trademark weapon, as well as a massive sword, meaning he is very well armed… for a fish!
Articulation in this line seems to be a slight problem for characters that aren’t the 4 main Turtles, while they benefitted from very reasonable POA (points of articulation), the secondary characters do not. Fishface has standard joints at his legs, waist, tail and wrists, as well as ball jointed shoulders. His neck and head both have swivel articulation, allowing some nice poses, but as with most figures of characters with necks like this, he can’t look behind him! (Much like the Masters of the Universe Classics Fang Man I reviewed this week) Even still, the figure works well and it still has 10 POA, so it’s far from awful!
