I know quite a few of you have been waiting a long time for this (including me) – it’s been running a bit late, but any work by the great Jacques Tardi is always worth waiting for. Now it is finally here, the latest in Fantagraphics’ very welcome series of translations of Tardi’s work, Goddam This War! A follow up to his incredibly powerful and moving It Was the War of the Trenches, executed in a more chronological manner than the earlier volume but sharing that burning anger at the squalor, pain, death and injustice of that awful, awful conflict. A few years back I said in my review that “War of the Trenches is the most powerful comic I’ve read on World War One since Charley’s War.” I still stand by that and expect even more from this second volume. This is going straight into my own collection, and in my opinion every decent graphic novel collection needs some Tardi in it, he is one of the great masters of the medium, from fantastic adventures (Adele Blanc-Sec) to hard boiled crime (adapting Manchette’s prose) to seething, searing indictments of warfare.
