Bruce Boxleitner signing in Forbidden Planet Edinburgh
Yesterday saw a very welcome return visit from the charming Bruce Boxleitner, much loved in science fiction circles for his roles in Tron and Babylon 5 (coincidentally two productions which are pioneers in the use of CGI effects), to the Edinburgh Forbidden Planet International.
Bruce was fresh from Saturday’s Comic-Con in Glasgow which he told us, despite the inevitable curse of the dreaded jet lag, had been very enjoyable and gone well, with great crowds. He was signing copies of Rise, an illustrated novel which also works as an introduction to the Lantern City sagas, a major new telefantasy series which Bruce is co-creator of. From the official description of the show:
“The new Steampunk show Lantern City, from executive producer Bruce Boxleitner, is an exciting foray into fan-inspired and fan-created television. It combines first-rate storytelling, innovative production design, and a rich world that fans will fall in love with. Even though it will blend great science fiction with dynamic storylines, at its heart the show asks two questions: how far would you go to be with the person you love and what lengths would you go to in order to survive.”
It’s a pretty good way to build interest in a new series – of course Bruce has a very good following among fans already and with the book and his convention going appearances and the online side of things to highlight it, I’d imagine that should help a lot. Plenty of talented people have good stories to tell, but sadly that isn’t always enough to get a production and broadcast deal, but when you have a good concept, stories plus you can already demonstrate a good fan following for the world you are creating then surely that’s got to give you an extra edge in the competitive world of creating new shows?
The staff and the fans had a great time with Bruce and we wish him all the best with Lantern City – obviously we’ll try to bring you more news on it further down the line, meantime you can learn more via their official site, Facebook and Twitter.
And a last couple of extra pics I just got today snapped by FPI Edinburgh’s Kally (thanks, Kally!) of Bruce with the Edinburgh crew after a cracking event:
