Stan Lee Excelsior Award

Paul Register,  Learning Resource Centre Manager at Ecclesfield School in Sheffield, has been explaining to us about a new comics award which he’s been involved in setting up and, rather nicely, it is an award which is being powered not by judges drawn from industry sources but from readers in schools. More specifically some 14 schools in the Sheffield area, plus a local private all-girls school (because we know girls read – and indeed make – comics) and schools in Doncaster, Rotherham, London, Edinburgh and Solihull as well. Paul says that in addition to the great Stan Lee allowing his name to be used for the award the industry has been giving them some good support, with books being sent out to the participating Sheffield schools. From the official description of the new award:

In 2011, Ecclesfield School in Sheffield will be organising and running a city-wide book award project called The Stan Lee Excelsior Award. Eight graphic novels will be on the shortlist, fourteen secondary schools are taking part and teenagers will be choosing the winner! The project will be run directly by school librarian and comics enthusiast Paul Register and has the full backing and support of both the Sheffield Schools Library Service and The Stan Lee Foundation. We are thrilled that Stan has given us his blessing and his permission to name this award after him.”

The idea is to encourage the city’s teen into more reading and also to highlight to librarians and teachers how useful the comics medium can be in encouraging the kids to read

The shortlist is fairly diverse, from manga to Bryan Talbot, from 2000 AD to DC Comics and consists of:

Black Butler: Vol. 1 by Yana Toboso. Publisher: Yen Press

Mezolith by Ben Haggerty and Adam Brockbank. Publisher: David Fickling Books

ABC Warriors: The Volgan War, Vol. 2 by Pat Mills and Clint Langley. Publisher: Rebellion/2000 AD

Grandville: Mon Amour by Bryan Talbot. Publisher: Jonathan Cape Ltd

Dark Reign: Sinister Spider-Man by Brian Reed and Chris Bachalo. Publisher: Marvel Comics

Batman and Robin: Batman Reborn by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. Publisher: DC/Titan Books (UK edition)

Twilight: The Graphic Novel Vol. 1 by Stephenie Meyer and Young Kim. Publisher: Atom

The Amazing Screw-On Head and Other Curious Objects by Mike Mignola. Publisher: Dark Horse

The actual awards ceremony will be on Friday 1st of July at Ecclesfield School’s Lady Mabel Hall; Paul tells us that there’s an official site being tweaked at the moment, but meantime you can find out more on the Facebook group page he’s set up and on the Heart of the School site here. Promoting comics and getting teens reading? Better believe we like the sound of that and I look forward to hearing more from Paul further down the line.
