Nostalgia & Comics, Birmingham – Looking great and now with added small press and back issues

Published On September 13, 2010 | By Richard Bruton | Comics

Nostalgia & Comics in Birmingham is one of the UK’s original comic shops, started in 1977, which makes it the second oldest in the UK (The SciFi Bookshop, now Forbidden Planet, Edinburgh, started life in 1975. It became a Forbidden Planet International store in 1997 and has, over the last year, seen a huge refurbishment and refit go on.

I spent many, many years at Nostalgia & Comics, 19 years, man and boy, Saturdays, school vacations, Uni breaks – the lot. In fact, I only left in 2006 when we moved up to Yorkshire and I realised the commute was going to be hell. I still miss it, and the staff, but make sure I regularly pop in at every opportunity.

It’s a big store, full of wonders, and with it’s refit it’s focus is now firmly on Comics and Graphic Novels, with a stunning stock range. So whilst in Birmingham this last weekend at the Zine Festival I finally remembered I should really show you how lovely it looks. So here you go…..

(It’s a big, big store…..)

(With lots and lots and lots of Graphic Novels – those are Marvel, DC, and just a small part of the Manga selection.)

(You want Vertigo and similar – lots to choose from!)

(Or maybe works from further afield? Cinebook, Fanfare, drawn & Quarterly, Fantagraphics and hundreds more publishers of some amazing works – all in one very large area with a great selection)

(And the latest addition to the store – the Small Press section – where we’ll sell YOUR works FOR FREE – details right here.)

(Just in case you get the idea that we’re not doing single issue comics anymore – far from it! That’s just part of our main comic wall…)

(And that’s our dedicated mezzanine level Back Issue section, probably the biggest and best walk-in selection in the country, packed with rarities and some great bargains and is something Kenny talked very proudly about here.)

Nostalgia & Comics now looks every bit the wonderful store that all of the staff always wanted it to be. Everyone involved with the refit and all the staff at Nostalgia are justifiably proud of how it’s looking. We think it’s a wonderful place to buy your comics and graphic novels in.

Hopefully next time you’re in Birmingham, you’ll pop along to see for yourselves!

As an old Brummie who was there in the beginning, it’s lovely to see that N&C is still thriving and better than ever. It’s a very special place, filled with memories and an absolute cultural mainstay: happy birthday Nostalgia – may the ride never stop.

Actually, thinking about it – any pictures or anecdotes from Nostalgia & Comics, or for that matter, any of the FPI stores, would be lovely. There’s so much history in these lovely comic stores of ours and so little of it is actually recorded.

Please, please send them into either the blog or myself at rlmbruton at

Wow, very impressed by the new look. Used to go every week in the 90s when i was at school but stopped going on a regular basis after i stopped collecting new comics. Will pay the place a visit soon though to see how it looks.
