Cute But Sad Comics

The main reason I had for picking this up is to see the latest episodes in the life of Badger. I reviewed the collected Badger a little while back and really did find it to be one of the sweetest things I’d read all year and certainly the saddest.

And in this latest volume of Howard’s mini-comic Anthropomorphism in Action there’s a special two part Badger tale. It’s every bit as wonderful and sad as the collection, with pages guaranteed to melt the hardest heart. In the Badger collection the misery and sadness never lets up but Howard finally relents a touch here and gives us just a little happiness for Badger. It’s a much appreciated Christmas treat. Of course, it’s a bitter-sweet moment, but it’s enough, just enough.

As well as the Badger strips, there’s a new Jack the nasty squirrel story, where the nasty little squirrel causes death and devastation just to steal a box of nuts from a poor, unsuspecting family. And a couple of new funny strips with the comedy Bronchioles¬† (yes, Bronchioles. The small tubes inside your lungs.) But if, like me, you fell in love with the wonderful Badger it’s worth the cost of the comic just to see that moment of happiness. Of course, the whole point to Badger is the bittersweet misery that Howard heaps upon his little friend, but I’m sure that after this little interlude we’ll be right back to the heartbreak. I’ll be eagerly awaiting it.

Anthropomorphism In Action Volume 4 is another great comic from Howard Hardiman. It’s not on the website yet, but I’m sure it will be soon. I’m sure if you just get in touch with Howard he’ll be very pleased to sell you one. And if you haven’t already done so, go to his webstore and buy Badger right away. There’s also a very cute crocheted Badger you can buy as well. Perfect for a Christmas present.

Richard Bruton. A happy badger is all I really wanted for christmas. I’ve sort-of got that now.
