Darker Matter wraps up

Published On August 2, 2007 | By Joe Gordon | Books, General

Sad news from Ben Coppin this morning – the new fifth issue of the online SF magazine Darker Matter, which I was pointing readers to the other day, will be the final one, at least for now. Ben has been paying the writers for the original fiction so he could maintain a professional standard but still running the site as free for readers, a pretty noble aim but also an expensive one and since the money is coming from his own pocket (plus the time to run the site in his spare hours) it has become too much. Ben has posted a longer explanation up on the DM blog and I quite understand his reasons (I’ve known others who have also struggled with the strain of running such a site on top of trying to hold down a job too); DM was a good push by Ben and it is work like this and similar sites that help create and sustain the SF community, so it is a shame to see it ending, although I am sure we will still see Ben posting on SF topics.
